The odds are starting to shorten on Andy Murray lifting the prestige BBC Sports Personality of the Year for a second time next December, with the tennis ace currently quoted as 12/1 to claim the honor. It’s all down to an unprecedented performance in Davis Cup which has seen Britain through to a semi-final for the first time in more than three decades.
Bookies William Hill have few doubts that the 2013 Wimbledon champion, who also won the BBC gong in 2013. has the momentum in his favor. And even the occasionally-dour Murray has expressed optimism about his side’s Davis Cup chances in the home tie with Australia.
“This team has done amazing things,” Murray said. “We’re punching above our weight here. We’re in the semi-finals now of the biggest competition in tennis. It’s been a long road back from where we were a few years ago but there are many players who have played their part in getting us here. I’m just proud to get here and hopefully we can do well against Australia in September.”
Murray’s winning for is also influencing the Davis Cup betting itself, with Britain tipped as 1/2 favorites in the tie. The Aussies led by Lleyton Hewitt stand 6/4 to deny the Brits a spot in the November final of the worldwide team competition.
“Andy Murray is by far the best player remaining in the Davis Cup and we fully expect team GB to win their first Davis Cup since 1936,” said a William Hill spokesman.
Overall, Britain is quoted at 13/8 to take the Davis Cup, with Australia 11/4 favorites. In the decidedly lower-profile second semi-final, Belgium stand 3/1 to go all the way while it’s 10/3 for perpetual semi-finalist Argentina.
