Top seeded Eric Quigley of the United States led three seeded singles players in advancing, while a local doubles duo pulled the upset of the tournament to highlight the second day of action at the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on the campus of Rice University in Houston on Wednesday.
Eric Quigley and second seed Matt Reid advanced with straight-set wins. Quigley dispatched of Henrik Wiersholm of the United States, 6-4, 6-3 while Reid needed a second set tiebreaker to eliminate Hans Hach of Mexico 6-4, 7-6(4). Fifth seed Michael Mmoh of the United States advanced to the second round in a walkover.
Two singles seeds fell on Wednesday.
Rishab Agarwal of India spotted seventh seed Tigre Hank of Mexico the opener set before ousting him, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 while eighth seed Jared Hiltzik of the United States fell in straight sets to Patrick Daciek of the United States 7-5, 6-1.
Playing on their home college courts, Adam Gustavsson of Sweden and David Warren of the United States upset the tournament’s second seed in doubles, Tigre Hank of Mexico and Manuel Sanchez of Mexico 6-3, 6-1. They will face fourth seed Vitali Reshetnikov of Russia and Mikhail Vaks of Russia who advanced by a walkover.
Top doubles seed Deiton Baughmanof the United States and Hans Hach of Mexico moved into the semifinals with a 6-2. 6-1 win over Peter Nagy of Hungary and Aurelien Tave of France. They will face third seeds Patrick Davidson of the United States and Matt Reid of Australia who advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Philip Wilbert Major of the Bahamas and Jody Turnquest of the Bahamas.
Play resumes on Thursday with singles play up first. Opening matches begin at 10 a.m. The doubles semifinal matches will follow later in the afternoon.
