The 29-year-old Rafael Nadal hasn’t won a major since the 2014 French Open, but he has played a fair amount this season. Nadal hasn’t won a major tournament this year, but he has managed to grab three small events: in Buenos Aires, Stuttgart and Hamburg. Last week, he did reach the finals in Basel, falling against Roger Federer.
Nadal, who is practicing and working all the time, believes that soon, he will be playing as well as he can. But his uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, isn’t sure exactly when he will win a Grand Slam event again, but eventually.
“I prefer to say nothing. For me, 14 [Grand Slams] it’s something incredible,” Tonic Nadal told Tages Anzeiger. “But I expect something better. If we are be able to work like we are doing now, he’ll be very strong in a few months. I expect we come back to the top. Rafa will be able to win Slams.”
During the summer, the former No. 1 and broadcaster John McEnroe said that Nadal isn’t playing up to his potential and maybe he should bring in another coach. Three of the top other players, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, all have former Grand Slam champion coaches: Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Amelie Mauresmo.
The Spaniard Toni Nadal never played on the pro tour. Toni Nadal has coached Rafa since he was a boy, but McEnroe thinks perhaps it’s time to bring in a new face.
“No problem, everybody can say what they want. I only hope that he is not right,” Tonic Nadal said. “Will I be Rafa’s coach forever? He has a good team – I’m not the only one, there is Francisco Roig [who also works with him on occasion]. But sometimes it’s beautiful listening to new things. I never won Wimbledon or Paris. Well, it depends on who speaks. When I say what he has to do at the net, he couldn’t believe me. If McEnroe does the same thing I did, then Rafa says: ‘Wow, he’s right.'”
