Even with controversy about betting companies sponsoring tennis tournaments, William Hill saw a good return on its association with the Australian Open.
Britain’s largest professional betting company said it picked up 1000 new customers a day while the tournament was on. During the first two days of the tournament, tennis betting was up 93 percent for the company, said the Financial Times, while two other British betting companies saw increases of almost half. The rise was driven for Williams Hill in Australia by a new app, which increased in-play betting by 238 percent.
William Hill shares, which had fallen 4.7 percent in the first two days of the tournament following the match-fixing controversy, regained their value.
The company is paying around AU$5 million annually for the sponsorship.
