Kei Nishikori will return to aim for a trophy hat-trick at the Barcelona Open next spring. Asia’s top player and the ATP No. 8, has won the last two editions at the Real Club in the Catalan capital and expects to be challenged in 2016 by the usual suspects – Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.
Nishikori calls Barcelona “a special place,” which brings joy to the heart of tournament boss Albert Costa.
“I am really excited to return to Barcelona next year and defend my title for the second consecutive time,” said Nishikori. “It is a very special tournament for me; I love both the city and the club and hope that I can count on the support of the fans again. It is definitely a very unique place for me.”
The 25-year-old will be playing the French Open tune-up for the sixth time after winning his latest title over Spain’s Pablo Andujar in straight sets in April.
Nishikori won the three trophies in 2015, with Barcelona his most prestigious of the season.
“This is magnificent news. The line-up could not be better right now with Nadal, Ferrer and Nishikori,” said Costa. “I’m sure that the fans will have a great time. We are very proud that we can again count on three players that are out of this world. I’m sure that many more will follow them,” said former Roland Garros champion Costa.
