No. 1 USC, defending champion Virginia advance
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Quarterfinals have been set for the 16 teams
competing in the 2010 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship hosted
by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

#1 USC: Top-ranked USC made quick work of fellow California squad Fresno
State in the first round, cruising to a swift 4-0 win over the No. 16
seeded Bulldogs. The win earned Southern California a spot in tomorrow's
quarterfinals against eighth-ranked Texas. USC faced Texas last year at
the ITA Team Indoors as well, with the Trojans notching a 4-1 upset over
the then-No. 2 ranked Longhorns. USC jumped ahead early with a couple
quick wins in doubles, highlighted by the pairing of Robert Farah/ Jason
McNaughton who upended Fresno State's #20 ranked duo Leiby/Zapletal in
an 8-3 decision to clinch the doubles point for the Trojans. Singles
play gave way to all straight-set wins by the Trojans including Peter
Lucassen clinching the victory for USC. Lucassen and Farah each ran
their singles win streaks out to six straight with today's victories.

#2 Virginia: Tournament host and second-seeded Virginia began its quest
for a third consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-0
opening round win over No. 16 Alabama. The Cavaliers will meet Georgia
in a quarterfinal match Saturday night that will be a rematch of the
2009 ITA National Team Indoor final, won by the Cavaliers in Chicago.
UVA (5-1) jumped out to a quick start with a dominating doubles
performance as a brand new doubles lineup produced immediate results. At
No. 1 doubles, Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney cruised to an 8-1 win
over Ricky Doverspike and Michael Davis. Virginia clinched the opening
point at No. 2 doubles, where Houston Barrick and Jarmere Jenkins topped
Saketh Myneni and Jarryd Botha 8-2. Virginia carried its momentum into
singles where they recorded three straight set wins including Jenkins
6-2, 6-2 clinching victory for the Cavs.

#3 Ohio State: Third-seeded Ohio State defeated No. 14 seeded
Louisville, 4-2, in the first round to advance to their
fourth-consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the ITA National Men's
Team Indoor Championship and will take on No. 11 Florida tomorrow. Ohio
State improves to 7-1 all-time against the Cardinals. Under 11th-year
head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes own a 9-8 record at the event with
all nine victories captured in the past four years. With the team
holding a close 3-2 advantage, Balazs Novak claimed the Buckeyes'
victory at No. 5 singles after downing Alejandro Calligari in straight
sets 6-4, 6-1. He improves to a team-high 13-3 overall with an 11-match
winning streak. Juniors Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa, who won the
ITA/USTA Summer Championships Doubles title, finished out doubles play
to seal the point, battling in a super-tiebreaker against Austen Childs
and Chidi Gabriel at No. 3. The Buckeye pair won 9-8 (12-10) and is 7-3
overall with a 2-0 mark at No. 3.

#4 UCLA: No. 4 UCLA took down the surging 13th-seeded Kentucky 4-1 in
the opening round, advancing to face another hot team in No. 5 Tennessee
in tomorrow's Quarterfinals. After splitting the first two doubles
matches, #36 Matt Brooklyn and Kallim Stewart clinched the doubles point
for the Bruins at No. 3 doubles. Brooklyn and Stewart also picked up
singles wins along with No. 118 Nick Meister to wrap up Friday's play.
After dropping the first set, Stewart posted two straight 6-3 sets to
clinch the match for UCLA. Kentucky got its lone singles win at the No.
2 singles position from #39 Alex Musialek, the reigning SEC Player of
the Week, who posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over UCLA junior Holden Seguso.

#5 Tennessee: The fifth-seeded Tennessee Volunteers faced 13th-ranked
Illinois for the second time in less than a week with the same result: a
victory. The match was close at times, but the Vols pulled away for a
4-0 win in the first round to advance to tomorrow's Quarterfinals versus
fourth-seeded UCLA. Just five days earlier, the Vols (8-0) defeated
Illinois 6-1 in Knoxville without Smith or senior Matt Brewer in the
lineup. No. 2-ranked Smith, who won the ITA/D'Novo All-American singles
and doubles titles in October, clinched the match in three sets at the
No. 1 position over Dennis Nevolo. Smith and senior Davey Sandgren also
secured the doubles point at the No. 1 spot. The Vols took a quick 1-0
lead on the doubles point and started out solidly in singles, winning
five of the six first sets. Smith had lost in straight sets a year ago
to Nevolo, but he came away the winner in the second meeting. Smith sent
the Vols to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory. For Smith,
the three-set match made for a good fitness test coming off the illness
earlier in the week.

#7 Georgia: In another classic battle between two SEC rivals ended with
No. 7th-seed Georgia edging the No. 10 seed Ole Miss in a tough-fought
4-3 match. The Rebels won the doubles point to gain the early advantage
with the team of Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lütjen finishing off an 8-6
win over the All-American duo of Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt at No. 1,
to clinch the point. The match came down to No. 3 singles where freshman
Jonas Lütjen battled senior Jamie Hunt. Lütjen gained the upper hand,
winning the first set 7-5, but Hunt came back to take the second 6-3. He
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, but Lütjen rallied and was
serving to even the set, before he got broke. Hunt went on to win the
final two games to clinch the 4-3 victory.

#8 Texas:Eighth-seeded Texas (5-0) claimed a hard-fought doubles point
and tacked on three straight-set singles wins as the Longhorns were able
to exact revenge on No. 9 seed Stanford with a 4-0 sweep of the
Cardinal. Texas' first win over Stanford since 1993 puts the Longhorns
in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship for a
third consecutive year. On Saturday, Texas will take on No. 1 USC, who
defeated the Horns at the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championship and
knocked off UT in the 2009 NCAA semifinals on its way to the NCAA title.
With both teams claiming doubles victories, the point came down to
Stanford's top-ranked duo of Ryan Thacher and Bradley Klahn versus No.
22-ranked Dimitar Kutrovskyand Josh Zavalaof Texas. The teams battled
back and forth with Texas leading 7-6. Zavala proceeded to unleash a
pair of service aces to put away the game and the match to deliver the
doubles point to the Longhorns.

#11 Florida: The 11th-seeded Florida Gators team posted a 4-2
first-round upset victory over No. 6 Baylor. Florida (5-1) avenged its
lone loss of the season and posted the day's lone upset in exciting
fashion, with three singles matches going to a third set and the doubles
point coming down to a tiebreaker on the first court. The loss was
Baylor's first of the season (5-1). With both teams claiming doubles
victories, the point came down to 10th-ranked French duo of Antoine
Benneteau and Alexandre Lacroix, who were able to pull out a 9-8 (3) win
at first doubles to clinch the point for the Gators. After losing the
first point of the tiebreaker, the UF duo rattled off six consecutive
points and went on to clinch the doubles point for the Gators.
