SKILLMAN, N.J. - With the ITA Team Indoor Championships just a week
away, the Virginia men and Stanford women continue their hold on the No.
1 spot since the start of the 2011 spring season.
After blanking Maryland to open conference play,
the top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team
took on its highest ranked opponent of the season, but posted another
7-0 victory as it downed No. 12 Kentucky Saturday night. The victory
extended the Cavaliers' school-record home winning streak to 82 matches.
Virginia also avenged last season's 4-3 loss at Kentucky, the Cavaliers'
only regular season loss since 2007.
Meanwhile, in a key early-season battle between two of the
nation's top teams, No. 1 Stanford jumped out to an early lead and held
on for a 5-2 victory over No. 4 UCLA on Saturday afternoon, extending
Stanford's NCAA-record home winning
streak to an unthinkable 168 consecutive matches (136
regular season, 32 NCAA Tournament)- a streak that spans nearly 12
seasons and is recognized as the longest active home winning streak
among all sports in Division I athletics. The Cardinal has not lost at
the Taube Family Tennis Stadium since a 5-4 setback against No. 4
California back on Feb. 27, 1999.
