La Jolla, Calif. - (March 4, 2011) – The co-number one seeded team of
Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford advanced to the fourth-round
of the 122nd Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship with a pair
of impressive victories at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club on Friday.
Following a first-round bye, Klahn and Thacher defeated Corey Smith of
San Diego and Ruben Torres of San Dimas , 6-1, 6-1 in a second-round
match. In their third-round encounter, Klahn and Thacher eliminated
Alejandro Moreno and Alfredo Moreno of Pepperdine University , 6-2, 6-0.
“It’s always nice to come back here. It’s one of my favorite
tournaments,” said Klahn, who reached the finals of the tournament with
Thacher last year. “Ryan and I have been playing well lately and we’re
just trying to play well each match and get better.”
JT Sundling, a USC sophomore who was scheduled to partner Jeff Tarango
as a co-number one seeded team, could not play in the tournament due to
an injury. His spot in the draw was taken by Garrett Snyder of Costa
Mesa , Calif.
After receiving a first-round bye, Tarango and Snyder defeated Jonathan
Raude and Jonathan Schroeder of Boston College , 6-2, 6-1. However,
Tarango and Snyder were eliminated in the third round by Sebastian
Fanselow and Jenson Turner of Pepperdine University , 6-2, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, tennis legend and former tournament champion Pancho
Segura paid a visit to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to watch some of
the action. During his visit, he met with Klahn, the current NCAA
singles champion. Segura , who won the Pacific Coast Doubles
Championship in 1947 with Frank Parker, is a former three-time NCAA
singles champion. Segura was inducted into the International Tennis Hall
of Fame in 1984.
The tournament continues with matches beginning at 9 a.m. (PT) on
Saturday. Sunday’s schedule, which features the semifinals, followed by
the finals, will begin at 9 a.m. (PT).
