You'd never guess that Gilles Simon felt iffy as recently as last week, would you? This was a long battle -- an hour and fifty minutes for two sets; Simon admitted that Fabio Fognini made him "run a lot" -- but Simon broke five times while being broken only twice. It is his first title in the better part of a year; his last was Hamburg 2012.
It's Simon's third title here. Guess we know why he keeps coming back!
Too bad it is only a 250. It helps him a little -- but only a little. He rises from #12 to #11. And he isn't going to gain much benefit from any other 250 point events.
Fabio Fognini can at least boast his first-ever ATP final. And he rises about nine places above his current #57.
