Budapest
Wednesday Summary
Singles - Second Round: (1) Roberta Vinci def. (WC)
Maria Joao Koehler 6-2 6-0
That should do it: Roberta Vinci is back in the Top
Twenty.
Singles - Second Round: (Q) Karin Knapp def. (2) Maria
Kirilenko 1-6 6-1 7-5
Maria Kirilenko had already pulled out of the doubles
with an injury, so this was somewhat expected. But it
costs her her chance to rise above #18.
Singles - Second Round: Silvia Soler-Espinosa def. (3)
Anabel Medina Garrigues 3-6 6-3 7-5
Unlike the preceding, this was not expected at all. This
costs Anabel Medina Garrigues the chance to clinch a
return to the Top Thirty, although it still looks fairly
likely.
Singles - Second Round: (4) Petra Cetkovska def. (Q)
Heather Watson 6-3 6-1
Heather Watson will remain below #100. She'll get a
wildcard into Wimbledon if she needs it, but Roland
Garros doesn't appear to be on the calendar.
Singles - Second Round: Galina Voskoboeva def. (5) Zheng
Jie 6-4 6-1
Cross Zheng Jie out of the contest for the Top Thirty.
But Galina Voskoboeva is up to around #42; another win
would likely make her Top Forty.
Singles - Second Round: (6) Kaia Kanepi def. Vania King
6-3 6-4
Vania King loses a bunch of points and will fall to
around #58.
Singles - Second Round: (7) Nadia Petrova def. Jarmila
Gajdosova 7-6(7-2), retired (Left Ankle Injury)
Jarmila Gajdosova loses even more points than King; she
appears bound out of the Top Sixty.
Singles - Second Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. (9)
Polona Hercog 6-4 3-0, retired (Right Foot Injury)
We had three retirements on this day, plus one other
player who probably should have. What a day....
Doubles - Quarterfinal: (2) Mirza/Rodionova def.
Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy 6-0 6-4
Doubles - Quarterfinal: (3) Shvedova/Voskoboeva def.
Bratchikova/Jurak 7-5 6-3
Doubles - Quarterfinal: Chuang/Zhang def. (4) Gajdosova/Hlavackova
walkover (Gajdosova: Left Ankle Injury)
