MOYA BACK FROM THE BRINK TO FACE RUSEDSKI IN FINAL
Carlos Moya has won his last six tournaments on the ATP Champions Tour, but Fabrice Santoro came within a game of halting his incredible record in Medellin, Colombia on Sunday.
Santoro, who had won 3 or their 4 meetings on the ATP World Tour, served for the match at 6-3, 5-4, but Moya came all the way back to win the match 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 in a Champions' Tie-Break.
The Spaniard will now face Greg Rusedski in the final after the Briton overcame defending champion Mark Philippoussis 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
“The style of play of Fabrice is very unique and for that reason it’s not easy for anybody to beat him," said Moya. "He served for the match, but fortunately I broke his serve and then I won that set. In the tie break I played very solid and took advantage of my opportunities. It was great to win a match like this one.”
For Rusedski, the ultimate challenge awaits.
“It’s great to be in another final," said Rusedski. "I’ve won two titles on this Tour so far and I’d love to make it a third. Today’s match was a close one so I’m really glad to come through it. Carlos is still so strong. He has every title on the Tour apart from this one so I’m sure he’ll be wanting to add it to his collection. I’ll have to serve really well to try and hold my own against him and give myself a shot.”
Philippoussis will now face Santoro in the 3rd/4th place play-off on Sunday.
MOYA - 'GIVE BLUE CLAY A CHANCE'
Carlos Moya believes that the players at the Mutua Madrid Open should give the new blue clay courts a chance before making up their minds.
Moya, who works for the tournament and will be flying there straight from Medellin, had this to say:
“I think the court is ok. I have practised a few times there on those courts. The bounce is maybe a bit lower than on the red clay but being in Madrid where there is altitude I think it is good that the bounce is not that high. I think that we have to give it a chance to succeed or to fail. After the tournament we will see how the matches went, how the players moved there, how they played, and we will see what the feeling is about the court. But we also should respect the players’ feelings and listen to their feedback on the court.”
