Some
Progress is Being Made About Grunting on Court
In
terms of Maria Sharapova’s audibility of the first day of Wimbledon, her
grunting can, and almost certainly will, get a lot louder. However,
after long promising to the address the ‘on court noise’ issue, the WTA
has come to an agreement with both the Grand Slam Committee and the
International Tennis Federation to develop what the British tabloid
newspapers once termed a ‘gruntometer.’
WTA
chief executive Stacey Allaster said: “It's time for us to drive
excessive grunting out of the game for future generations." So, with the
tennis rule makers determined to pass new legislation that sets a limit
for the amount of noise produced by players, Allaster has committed the
WTA to develop a monitoring device that can be attached to umpires chair
or even hand-held and be triggered when grunting becomes excessive."
Nalbandian Was Closely Watched On Court Without Incident
The
behavior of David Nalbandian on Day One of Wimbledon was monitored even
more closely than the traditional appearance of the Men’s champion at
1pm sharp or the design of Maria Sharapova’s dress. Playing his first
competitive match being disqualified for injuring a line judge during
the AEGON Championships final at Queen’s Club final, the Argentine
behaved himself impeccably.
Is
Gulbis Turning The Corner?
Back
in 2007 when he scored wins over Tommy Robredo and Tim Henman at two
majors, Latvia's Ernests Gulbis was considered one of the ATP's most
promising players, but the now 23 year old didn’t develop the proper
work ethic to be able to fulfill has promise and even though he's put
together some terrific results over the years including in 2011 when he
reached a carrier high No. 21 in the rankings, he has never been a major
threat at the Grand Slams.
That
might have changed after he upset former Wimbledon finalist Tomas
Berdych in the first round of Wimbledon. The talkative and enigmatic
Gulbis isn’t sure whether he has turned his career around yet, but he
began to work with a new coach, Austria’s Gunther Berezniki in the last
month and says he's recommitted to the sport.
Members of the All-England Club Are Cautioned About Proper Dress
Old-school
Wimbledon has responded to today's casual fashion trends by tightening
the dress code for members who wish to breach the confines of the
clubhouse at the tony All England club.
"The
dress standard for gentlemen is lounge suit or tailored jacket, shirt,
tie, trousers and dress shoes. Ladies are expected to dress to a similar
standard," the guide specifies.
