Murray In
Tokyo Without Lendl Is Facing New Challenges
US
Open champion Andy Murray is ready to get back to the competitive arena
and three weeks after his first Grand Slam triumph will begin his bid to
retain the Rakuten Japan Open title with a tricky confrontation against
Gael Monfils.
Murray arrived in Tokyo on Thursday but is not with
coach Ivan Lendl for the Asian swing where last year he also won titles
in Bangkok and Shanghai. “It will be a tough first match against Gael,”
said Murray. “I've played him I think five times and lost to him a
couple of times. He's a great athlete.”
Li Doesn't
Give In To Pressure
Li
Na, who suffered an embarrassing defeat in the first round of the China
Open's last year, says that she feels more at ease this time around.
"I don't give in to too much pressure, because
after all you never know how your performance is going to be," she said.
"You don't know the performance of the opponent either." What really
matters is you can experience the whole match and concentrate."
Murray In
Tokyo Hoping To Defend Two Titles
The
year-end ATP wrap-up event in London remains the prime late-season goal
for Andy Murray, with the Scot hoping for a better showing at home than
he had as he fizzled out in 2011 with injury and fatigue.
The No. 3 is resuming this week as he defends
singles and doubles titles in Tokyo at the Japan Open. But after winning
three straight Asian titles in as many weeks a year ago, he realizes he
might have also compromised his fitness,
Simon Breaks
With Coach Tulasne
Gilles
Simon has joined French compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in stepping away
from a coach and going it alone on the ATP. While Tsonga cut the ties
months ago and has maintained a top 10 ATP position, it's all new to
Simon, as the No. 19 parted amicably with longtime mentor Thierry
Tulasne while playing the Thailand Open.
