Strycova Given Six-Month Ban For Doping Violation
As
calls for increased levels of drug testing have become prevalent in
top-flight tennis and the Czech Republic’s Barbora Zahlavova Strycova
has been given a back-dated six-month ban after testing positive for a
banned stimulant, the sport’s four ruling bodies have agreed to meet in
New York next month to address the issue.
Williams Could Regain Number One This Week
As
she approaches a possible return to No. 1 status, Serena Williams can't
seem to work out her sentiments on the possibility. In Doha this week
and needing a semi-final placing to clinch the top WTA spot and displace
Victoria Azarenka, the American can't seem to get her public story
straight.
Russell Is Amazed By Djokovic
American
veteran Michael Russell will turn 35 in May and one of the few men of
that age still in the top 100 in singles. A bulldog of a player who came
on tour primarily as a counterpuncher, over recent years he has forced
himself to come forward more often as he isn’t quick as he once was and
it doesn’t benefit him to be constantly drawn into long rallies. Russell
is wowed by no. 1 Novak Djokovic, whom he says has taken the game to new
heights.
Del Potro Disagrees With Nadal About Court Surfaces
Argentine
Juan Del Potro has offered a contrasting opinion after Rafael Nadal's
angry supposition that hard court ATP play is damaging player health.
The Argentine who won the 2009 US Open, said that it's up to each player
to make his own scheduling choices.
"Hard court might not be the best for his (Nadal's) knees, that's true,"
said Del Potro, ranked seventh on the ATP. "But of course he's fantastic
on clay, that's his surface.
