SUNDAY REVIEW – FERRER RETAINS TROPHY; ITALIAN DUO WINS
DOUBLES TITLE
• World No. 4 David
Ferrer successfully defended his title and in turn,
lifted his 20th ATP World Tour trophy. • Ferrer won
his 10th clay-court crown, moving into a third place tie
with Nikolay Davydenko and Roger Federer among active
players for the most titles on the surface. •
Wawrinka was contesting his first ATP World Tour final
since 2011, when he captured the title in Chennai. •
Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini won their
second team title.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
David Ferrer: “I am very happy for this title. I
cannot describe it with other words. It’s very hard to
win back-to-back titles, and this tournament in Buenos
Aires is always very tough. I am very proud.”
On the state of tennis in his country:
“Spanish tennis is going through a marvelous time. In
the last 10 to 15 years, there [have been] great tennis
players. There are always a couple of players in the Top
10 and because of that, since 2009, there have been only
Spanish players winning this tournament.”
Stanislas Wawrinka: “I think David was better
today. He was a little bit stronger than me and he
deserved the victory. But I'm really happy with my week.
It was important to play well and win some great
matches, especially the semi-final yesterday. It was a
great week for me so I need to take the positives from
that.”
Fabio Fognini: “Right now, I’m really happy
because we had a great week and won our second title
together. Outside the court, we are friends, which is
important. We hope to play well in Acapulco and will try
to do our best.”
