FINALS REVIEW – QUALIFIER GULBIS COMPLETES RUN WITH
TITLE; BLAKE/SOCK TRIUMPH • World
No. 109 Ernests Gulbis won his second trophy in Delray
Beach and third ATP World Tour title overall. •
Gulbis is the first qualifier to win a title in 2013 and
the third to capture the Delray Beach crown. He became
the fourth multiple title winner at the event, having
also triumphed in 2010. • This was the first time two
players ranked outside the Top 100 contested a
tour-level final since 2007 in Houston, when World No.
108 Ivo Karlovic beat 156th-ranked Mariano Zabaleta.
• Roger-Vasselin was appearing in his first ATP World
Tour final. • James Blake and Jack Sock won their
first team title. Last week, they reached the final in
Memphis on their team debut (l. to Bryans).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Ernests Gulbis: “I'm really happy. I
worked hard. These last nine days were tough. I had a
match almost every day, except one day when it rained,
so I'm exhausted now. It's my favourite tournament. It's
the only tournament in the world I am winning.”
On his impending rankings rise: “Everyone is
really happy. We didn’t think it was going to happen so
fast. My coach felt I would go back into the Top 100 in
April. I won eight matches in a row here. It’s a really
good start to the year.”
Edouard Roger-Vasselin: “He deserved the
win. I thought I served pretty well. I had a set point
but he made an unbelievable backhand winner. When you
lose in a final, it’s tough, but it was a great week for
me. It will give me confidence for the next tournament.”
James Blake: “I really have to thank
Jack. He played unbelievable. It’s a ton of fun to play
with someone who really enjoys playing. He’s a great
partner.”
Jack Sock: “Obviously, it’s a big step
for me. It was tough conditions today, but it was a lot
of fun. I want to thank the tournament director (Mark
Baron) for giving me a wild card in both singles and
doubles. That was very generous. I was lucky to play
with such a great player. We had a blast. We joked
around and had fun, but I learned a lot, too.”
