entered the final stages of negotiation with Major League Soccer to buy
a team and put it into a new stadium in the same park in Flushing, close
to the US Open site. Plans call for a 25,000 to 35,000-seat soccer
stadium, which has also been opposed by parks groups as it would take
away 13 acres of parkland. It is said to be $340 million deal that the
City supports. The owner would privately finance the stadium, which
according to Crain’s would operate on a 35-year, $1-a-year lease.
