It is no secret that Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki are best of buddies, who like nothing more than catching a game of hoops or taking long walks along the beach.
They are also pretty familiar with one another on the court, meeting 11 times over the past six years. If last summer is anything to go by – when they crossed paths at Montréal, Cincinnati and the US Open – this rivalry is likely to be resumed over the upcoming North American hardcourt season.
However, should fate keep them apart, fans of both players can comfort themselves in the knowledge that the next Williams-Wozniacki date is already in the diary. This November, the two will play an exhibition in Herning, Denmark.
The Energi Champions Battle 2015 takes place on November 26 at the Jyske Bank Boxen. The appetizer sees Frederik Nielsen and Jonathan Marray take on Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer in a repeat of the 2012 Wimbledon final before Wozniacki, in her first match on home soil in more than two years, faces off against Williams.
“I am looking forward to once again play in Denmark, it is always something special,” Wozniacki said. “To do this against Serena is something extra special. She is not just a good friend, she is one of the greatest in the history of women’s tennis. It is going be a unique night at the Jyske Bank Boxen, a place of which I have heard a lot of good things, but never been to.”
Williams, on the other hand, is already familiar with the 12,000-capacity arena, where she took on Ana Ivanovic last November.
“I am looking forward to once again come to Herning. I had so much fun last year, the crowd and Herning was great,” Williams said. “To play my best friend Caroline is just adding to my joy of playing in Herning. She is going to be tough to play on home soil, but I will do my best to win.”
