Five years after Robby Ginepri’s finest hour, reaching the US Open semi-finals, the 32 year-old’s management company Octagon announced his decision to retire from the ATP World Tour.
Ginepri made it to at least the fourth round at each of the four Grand Slam tournaments and was a member of the US Davis Cup and Olympic teams. He won three singles titles and reached a career-best ranking of No. 15, amassing a prize fund of US$ 3,777,769.
Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida but raised in Cobb County, Georgia, he turned professional in 2001 but had to wait four years to really make his mark, reaching the semi-finals at Cincinnati.
Just a few weeks later he progressed unseeded to the last four of the US Open, beating the likes of Gilles Muller (who had just eliminated Andy Roddick), Tommy Haas, Richard Gasquet and Guillermo Coria before eventually losing out 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Andre Agassi.
In doing so, Ginepri became the first player in the Open to play four consecutive five-set matches at the US Open. He remains the most recent American man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal.
