Doubles invariably prove critical in tense Davis Cup ties and Australian captain Wally Masur believes his partnership of Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth will be more than able to withstand the pressure of potentially taking on the Murray brothers, Andy and Jamie, as well as a vociferous 8,500 Scottish crowd in Glasgow on Saturday.

Hewitt and Groth triggered the Australian comeback after a disastrous first day in Darwin against Kazakhstan in July. The pair registered a straight sets win over Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov and then took over the singles roles from Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis to secure a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinal.

Masur linked up with his team in London at the weekend after being delayed at the US Open fulfilling his commentary duties with the Fox cable network. “I’m definitely looking at Lleyton and Grothy as the doubles team at the moment,” he said. “I won’t go all [and play ducks and drakes.” Groth is more than ready for the responsibility. “The doubles is always crucial but when you have someone like Andy in the opposing team who it’s very tough to win singles against, the doubles becomes even more important,” he said.

“I’m extremely excited about playing. I believe we are good enough to win.

“Lleyton has always played his best in Davis Cup and I think in Darwin we both proved we can win and perform in a situation where our backs are against the wall and the pressure is on.”
