Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza, without a coach since splitting with Alejo Mancisidor just before the US Open last month, intends to see if Sam Sumyk is the man to guide her upwards from her current world ranking of no.10.
Sumyk, the Frenchman who coached Victoria Azarenka to the world no.1 spot and two Australian Open titles, became available when Eugenie Bouchard dispensed of his services following a lamentable run of results.
Muguruza experienced a disappointing US Open, losing in the second round to British qualifier Johanna Konta and has struggled with her game since reaching a first Grand Slam event final at the All England Club.
As a temporary measure, Spanish Fed Cup captain Conchita Martinez coached her in New York but Muguruza, who turns 22 years of age in a fortnight’s time, is looking for something permanent.
Muguruza teamed up with Sumyk in Barcelona last week and the pair have now traveled to Japan where she is contesting the Toray Pan Pacific Open. “I’ve been working very hard with Sam these days and will trial [the partnership] at Tokyo,” she said.
Seeded third, Muguruza is through to the third round in Tokyo after registering a 6-3,6-4 win over the Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova earlier today.
