The two most successful nations in the history of the Davis Cup clash in the World Group’s opening round next March (4 thru 6) when the United States must travel to face Australia.
Hosts Australia was beaten semi-finalists last weekend while Jim Courier’s USA team preserved their World Group status with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan in Tashkent. Both were beaten in 2015 competition by Great Britain, the USA losing in the first round back in March while Australia also experienced an arduous trip to Glasgow.
The Aussies get home advantage by virtue of the last meeting between the two teams, back in 1999, took place at the historic Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and US captain Jim Courier will be intent on revenge after losing his singles rubber on the first day in straight sets to Patrick Rafter.
The USA is the most successful nation in Davis Cup history, having been crowned champion on 32 occasions while Australia follow up in the all-time list with 28 titles.
It will be the 46th meeting between the two Grand Slam hosting nations with the USA currently leading 25-20.
The full World Group draw, made at the International Tennis Federation annual general meeting in Bogota was:
Great Britain at home to Japan after choice of venue decided by lot.
Serbia at home to Kazakhstan after choice of venue decided by lot.
Italy at home to Switzerland.
Poland at home Argentina after choice of venue decided by lot.
France at home to Canada.
Germany at home to Czech Republic.
Australia at home to USA.
Belgium at home to Croatia.
The 2016 World Group dates are as follows:
World Group first round: March 4-6
World Group quarterfinals: July 15-17
World Group semifinals and play-offs: September 16-18
World Group Final: 25-27 November
