After a traumatic few months that have seen Grigor Dimitrov split from high-profile girlfriend Maria Sharapova, dispense of the services of trusted coach Roger Rasheed and slip from a place inside the world’s top ten to a current position of 19th, the Bulgarian is now moving forward again with the appointment of Franco Davin.
The 24 year-old Bulgarian, not too long ago viewed by many as the next potential superstar of the men’s game and managed by Roger Federer’s long-term agent Tony Godsick, has moved to snap up Argentine Davin who ended his working relationship with Juan Martin del Potro in July.
Dimitrov, who previously has been coached by Patrick Mouratoglou and Peter McNamara, reportedly tried to lure Ivan Lendl back into life on the ATP World Tour but Andy Murray’s former mentor declined.
Last month Dimitrov was beaten in the US Open’s second round by Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin and failed to make the quarterfinals at any of 2015’s four Grand Slam events this year. However in 2014 he was a Wimbledon semi-finalist after ending Murray’s title defense.
Prior to working with del Potro, 45 year-old Davin coached another fellow Argentine Gaston Gaudio to the 2004 French Open title. As a player in Buenos Aires he distinguished himself as the youngest player to win an ATP World Tour main draw match at 15 years one month.
Davin progressed to win three career singles titles and enjoyed a career high ranking of world no.30 almost 25 years ago. He and Dimitrov are expected at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur that begins next week.
