Serena Williams, deciding not to play again this season, could be hit with several fines and penalties for withdrawing from Beijing and the WTA Finals.

First, Williams will not get the player bonus for playing each Premier Mandatory, of which Beijing is one — the No. 1 receives $450,000 for playing all four events. Williams has also not played four of the five Premier 5 events, which is another $450,000 she will not receive. Players also receive a minimum of $150,000 for playing three matches at the WTA Finals.

In addition, Williams could be fined $75,000 for her Beijing withdrawal as well as suspended for two weeks if she does not do a promotional appearance for the tournament. She could also be fined $125,000 for not playing Singapore. A potential suspension for the WTA Finals could also apply.

However, Williams could ask for an exemption saying she has a long-term injury, which requires a doctor’s statement and can be used if a player does not play for eight tournament weeks, though it will not have been that long by the time the WTA Finals are played.

Williams withdrew from the events citing injuries she said she has played with through most for the season.

However, with winnings of $10 million this season, Williams can likely afford the cost of her time off.
