The first round of the main draw continued Tuesday with 11 singles matches and one doubles match at the Fairfield Men’s Pro Challenger presented by Francis Ford Coppola Winery. Most of the day’s matches were won in straight sets, with many concluding quicker than expected in anticlimactic fashion.

4 of the 10 Americans competing today advanced to the second round, including Jared Donaldson and Taylor Fritz who recently competed in the final round of the Sacramento $100K.

No. 1 seed and top US men’s ranked player Tim Smyczek and his opponent Mark Krueger had their All-American feature match suspended in the third set due to lighting, to be completed tomorrow. The matchup between Smyczek and Mitchell Krueger was the most entertaining pairing of the day, with Smyczek and Krueger exciting the crowd with a point for point, game for game first set with both players going big from the baseline. Smyczek’s strategic backhand to backhand technique stretched Krueger out, with Krueger evening his points with powerful down the line forehands. Smyczek recovered control and kept his opponent on the run through the second to take the set, but complained of lighting issues with Krueger leading 3-1 in the third. USTA Officials ruled to suspend the match until tomorrow.

The Fairfield Men’s Pro Challenger resumes tomorrow at 11am.

The tournament, which is a $50K USTA Pro Circuit and ATP Challenger event, is the last of three men’s USTA Challenger events that swing through northern California, with proceeds to benefit the Chris Cammisa Tennis and Education Foundation (CCTEF).

All events and the tournament are located at 3254 Rancho Solano Parkway; In-Shape: Fairfield Rancho Solano is a multi-recreational, family athletic facility offering health, fitness, sports, recreation and social programs for people of all ages and interests.
