Michael Mmoh of the United States capped an impressive week of tennis by ousting unseeded Lucas Gomez 6-3, 6-2 to claim the 2015 Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup singles title on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on the campus of Rice University on Saturday.
Mmoh, who did not lose set on his way to the title. He raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before Gomez struck back to win three straight games. Mmoh held serve in the ninth game to take the first set, but the second set was up for grabs early as the two players traded breaks through the first three games.
Mmoh stemmed the tide by holding serve in the fourth game, then broke Gomez in the fifth to take a commanding 4-1 lead, then served out to capture the title.
