The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced today that Flavia Pennetta has qualified for this year’s BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. She joins Simona Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber in the singles field of eight, with one more spot yet to be determined.
Pennetta will make her debut appearance at the WTA Finals in Singapore in the singles field. The Italian holds two WTA Finals doubles appearances, winning the WTA Finals in doubles in 2010 and also competing in 2011 (both w/ Gisela Dulko).
“Qualifying for the WTA Finals in Singapore is a dream come true and the perfect way to end to an amazing season for me,” said Pennetta. “It will also be a wonderful way for me to say to say goodbye to tennis – it’s a spectacular stage to bow out on. Having won the WTA Finals before in doubles, I can’t wait to make my debut in singles.”
Pennetta won her first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open this year. The WTA veteran fought off three seeded players including former U.S. Open Champion Samantha Stosur, two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova and current World No. 2 Simona Halep in order to capture the title at Flushing Meadows. The 2015 WTA Finals will be the last event of her career, as she has announced her retirement from tennis.
