It almost seems that every other day in 2015, there has been a story about Nick Kyrgios getting into trouble by doing this or saying that. However so long as the controversial Australian keeps to the straight and narrow for the next two months, he should be able to step away from the glaring spotlight he has created after announcing his competitive year is done.
Currently ranked the world no.30, marking an improvement of 22 places since the beginning of the year, Kyrgios used Twitter to break the news he had decided to withdraw from next week’s BNP Paribas Masters in Paris because of an arm injury.
Kyrgios also failed to finish the 2014 season, citing fatigue after contesting September’s BTT Thailand Open in Bangkok. This year he made his announcement by tweeting: “Another year in the books. ?#SeasonOver ?#Thanks.”
In 2014 he only managed to play 11 tournaments, this year he has upped that total to 18 with a win/loss ratio of 24/18 and amassing US $954,915 in prize money.
Kyrgios’ concluding ATP World Tour match of the year was an uninspired 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 loss to 170th-ranked German qualifier Daniel Brands in the Valencia Open.
However when he resumes in the New Year he will still be effectively on probation with the threat of a one month suspension from the ATP World Tour should he be hit by anymore fines that come to a total of $3500US before February 24.
Kyrgios is contracted to play for the Singapore Slammers in the International Premier Tennis League that commences in Kobe on December 2.
