James Blake ran the N.Y. marathon on Sunday, finishing in three hours, 51 minutes.
It was the second year in a row that a well-known tennis player was running, with Caroline Wozniacki having done it in about three and a half hours a year ago. Blake’s wife Emily and his daughter, Riley, greeted him as he finished. While Wozniacki was hugged by Serena Williams as she competed her race, Blake also had a fellow player cheering him on as Victoria Azarenka arranged on social media to meet him as he came in.
Blake has happy with his performance but not looking to make it a regular event. “I had fun, but will leave this for the professionals,” said the former No. 4. “I was nervous at the start and halfway through didn’t think I’d make it under four hours.”
Blake, who often had the crowds roaring for him at the neighboring US Open, also had a loud reception from the throngs who showed up at the race. Blake’s profile is now even higher in the city, with the player gaining attention for campaigning to reduce police violence following his experience being mistakenly tackled by a police officer during the US Open.
Comparing the two was difficult, he added, saying, “It’s a little different, but both are amazing… Here they are cheering for so many people. The Open they are cheering for just you.”
