It appeared that the WTA was over for the season as the top 8 players (with the exception of No. 1 Serena Williams, who had decided not to play for the rest of the year) were finished at Singapore last week, but the Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai is going on this week, with a number of the players who are ranked No. 9 to No. 2.
The veterans Jelena Jankovic is playing there and said that she is thrilled to be competing, but not everyone is healthy.
“I think all of the players are tired mentally and physically,” Jankovic said “I’m here to compete one more week. Last week of the season for us, so I really want to give my best and finish strong, finish the year in a good way. In the last month or so I won two tournaments; I played a lot of matches; I’ve been traveling from Asia to Europe, from Europe to Asia. It’s really not easy on the body to handle the jet lag and the time differences and weather conditions. But I’m here, and I’m really trying to do my best. I don’t want to complain. We’re all in the same condition, so we’re all trying.”
The former No. 1 Jankovic kept her eyes looking at Aga Radwanska during last weekend. The Pole was almost out of the competition, but came back to beat Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova to win the title, the biggest of her career.
The young Muguruza had won three matches in the Round Robin, but then she went down in the semis against Radwanska in a very close contest. Maria Sharapova had also gone 3-0, but she lost against Kvitova in the semis. As Jankovic said, that’s how the ball bounces.
“Anyone can win,” Jankovic said. “The competition is so tough these days that anyone can win on a certain day. Those players are playing so well that it’s just a matter of here and there little bits that make a difference. Maybe Maria and Garbine were a little bit tired because they won three matches in a row. Maybe they were a little bit exhausted or they gave up a little bit. Aga deserved to win. It’s not easy playing as well the semis and winning the Finals. Only congrats. All of those players deserved to be in the Championships, and the better one won at the end. That’s the fun part about our game.”
