Richard Gasquet will receive $275,000 to play the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), with the Frenchman scheduled to play nine days of the offseason league.
The Frenchman will be playing for the team from the Philippines. Gael Monfils will be joining him but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was criticized for appearing in the league following his injury-affected appearance at Davis Cup and could not play at the beginning of this season, is not returning.
“I won’t sell you on the experience, but it seems like a nice thing to be part of,” said Gasquet in Journal du Dimanche.
But he is limiting his participation to train for next season. “The check would have been bigger had I stayed for 18 days, but there would have been a cost the following year,” he said. “It’s too complicated to do all of this event and participate in Australia.”
The top players, like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic are getting paid much larger amounts and are playing just a few matches. The IPTL is being played between teams across six Asian cities in its second year.
