This year, the famous duo of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played only once, a few weeks ago when the Swiss beat the Spaniard in the final of Basel.
But the 17-time Grand Slam event champion Federer and the 14-time Grand Slam event winner Nadal haven’t contested much at all during the past two years. In 2014, they faced off once, in the Australian Open semifinals, won by Nadal.
Currently, Nadal leads their head to head with 23 wins for the Spaniard and 11 victories for Federer.
In 2013, they clashed four times, which was a very good year (all wins by Nadal), but the following two seasons they have been unable to connect but once. Perhaps it’s because after 2014 Wimbledon, Nadal was seriously hurt and was unable to play much.
This season, Nadal has played quite a bit, but he hasn’t been able to go deep every time, which is why they haven’t been able to clash as much. But perhaps this week at the ATP World Finals in the O2 Arena in London, the two rivals can face off once again.
“For sure I miss that. The atmosphere that you breathe on those days was special obviously,” Nadal told the Daily Mail. “When we played together in the most important tournaments in the world – probably the only tournament that we didn’t play a final in was the US Open, we played finals in the rest – it was great. I believe that the combination of styles make that rivalry so special.”
