The second singles spot in Britain’s Davis Cup line up remains open to conjecture but 20 year-old Kyle Edmund appears to have played his way into pole position for a dramatic debut after winning last weekend’s Copa Fila Challenger final on the red clay of Buenos Aires.
Edmund has been a hitting partner and squad member throughout Britain’s run to this year’s final but has never made it into the team with James Ward filling the second singles spot against both the United States and France with Daniel Evans receiving a surprise call up for the semi-final against Australia.
Now Edmund, the 20 year-old from Beverley, Yorkshire appears to be favorite to face Belgium in Ghent after scoring back-to-back victories over a couple of much higher ranked Argentines in Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballos.
“Obviously this week has been good for me,” said Edmund. “The whole point of coming to South America was to prepare for Davis Cup, otherwise I would have stayed on hard courts.
“The way I played this week, each round got better and better. To come through it was a real positive. I knew I would have to play well in the final against someone like Berlocq because he is very experienced.
“Getting on the clay has actually felt like a fresh start and a nice change. It suits my game pretty well and it was good to have a new look at things, a new way of playing.”
Edmund subsequently equaled his career best ranking position of 99 and is this week contesting another Challenger event, the Uruguay Open in Montevideo.
Edmund is the Uruguay Open’s fifth seed and could conceivably progress towards the week-end, which would mean a rush to back across the Atlantic to link up with the rest of the team. “That’s the nature of the situation,” he said. “If I win a lot of matches I’ll be late back. If I’m in Uruguay for longer that’s a good problem to have.”
