A large crowd gathered at the Roger Scott Tennis Center today to watch local high school player Chris Ephron and former UWF player and national champion Bruno Savi compete in the doubles finals of the Pensacola Futures tennis tournament. Despite the cheers and support from the crowd, Savi and Ephron lost in two sets to Denis Shapovalov from Canada and Peter Nagy from Hungary. Shapovalov and Nagy were ranked as the 2464th doubles team at the start of the tournament.
Shapovalov lost his singles match earlier today to Henrik Wiersholm. Wiersholm, a sophomore at the University of Virginia, has been on a hot streak this tournament winning eight straight sets and will play in the finals tomorrow at noon. Wiersholm, who didn’t lose a game in his previous two matches, is 18 years old.
Alex Rybakov, who is also only 18 years old, advanced to the finals this morning with a three set thriller over Argentinian Maximiliano Estevez. Rybakov won the first set 6-1 and lost the second set 3-6. The third set was neck and neck, but Rybakov eventually won 7-5. Rybakov reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 junior US Open, and reached the finals at the last Futures tournament in Niceville.
The finals tomorrow featuring Henrik Wiersholm and Alex Rybakov will begin at 12 p.m.
