Judy Murray has lost a bureaucratic battle in Scotland, with her ambitious plans for a tennis center to be built near son Andy’s home village of Dunblane rejected by local councilors. The body in Stirling gave a thumbs-down to the plan which would have featured a sports and housing development concentrating – naturally – on tennis.
Mum Murray was set to have promoted the plan as part of her constant efforts to tout Scottish tennis; the complex could have included tennis and golf facilities, a visitor center and museum set inside parkland. A luxury hotel would have also been included.
Officials told local media that part of their objections came from the fact that the center would be located on public parkland, adding that not enough “affordable” housing had been factored in as well as adding that no services or amenities yet existed nearby.
Among those backing Judy’s plans were former Manchester United football manage – and fellow Scot – Alex Ferguson plus golfer Colin Montgomerie. There were apparently more than 1,000 objections to the scheme and just 45 in support.
“For over 25 years, local communities have fought against development at Park of Keir. Judy Murray had a good idea but it was in completely the wrong location – I’m sure that sporting legacy can be secured elsewhere,” a local opponent told Scottish media.
