Garbine Muguruza will play as the main drawcard at the first WTA grass tournament in Majorca next June, another addition in the expanded run-up to Wimbledon. The island has long been a European holiday destination, with bettors now able to take in the WTA tennis after a day on the beach loungers from June 11-19.
During the recent ground-breaking at the site, No. 3 Muguruza said she was convinced that the new tournament on grass would be a perfect fit for her tennis after reaching the 2014 Wimbledon final against Serena Williams. “It’s always a special incentive to compete in a tournament on home soil. I am really happy to be in the coming year in the first edition of the Majorca Open here,” said the two-time WTA tournament winner.
The new grass event will follow the Stuttgart ATP tournament, won this year by Rafael Nadal in its first edition on grass. As it happens, the Spaniard’s uncle and coach Toni Nadal is official ambassador for the new WTA outing.
“It’s great that Majorca is the venue of a WTA tournament from next year. The Santa Ponsa Tennis Club and the planned luxury hotel not only offer athletes optimal opportunities but will also quickly become a prime holiday destination. Because of fair weather in June, players will experience in the Majorca Open without any weather interruptions, which is unfortunately often the case at other tournaments in the run-up to Wimbledon,” said the elder Nadal.
The new club currently under construction will feature a Centre Court for 3,500 spectators and another five grass courts. It will also feature seven clay and three hardcourts. The clubhouse offers a pool area and an exclusive roof terrace from which matches can be seen. “We are working to incorporate other activities into the tennis lifestyle event, including golf, yacht rides and a gourmet festival with star chefs playing their important role.”
The license for the Majorca Open is held in Austria by Tennis International Management GmbH, which also runs Stuttgart and the Vienna 500 ATP indoor event.
