Defending champion and third seed Petra Kvitova (CZE) has been forced to withdraw from the Apia International Sydney with a gastrointestinal illness.
“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from the Apia International Sydney but unfortunately I am still not feeling well,” said Kvitova.
“Being defending champion, this tournament obviously means a lot to me and I’ve always had a wonderful time playing this event.
“I look forward to coming back in future years to play for my fantastic fans.”
Tournament Director Alistair MacDonald wished Kvitova a speedy recovery.
“We are sorry to receive the news that Petra has had to withdraw from the tournament. She was a great champion here in 2015 and we wish her a speedy recovery and all the best for the Australian Open.”
