Andy Murray Tennis News

Feelings are still running strong about the apparent snub delivered to Aljaz Bedene by the International Tennis Federation at the player’s appeal against the block of his international switch to Britain. And Andy Murray accused tennis’ governing body as being “disrespectful.”

Bedene cannot join up with the British Davis Cup team in next week’s World Group final against Belgium in Ghent his application to switch his nationality from Slovenian clashed with the introduction of new ITF rules saying player cannot represent two nations.

His appeal is based upon the fact he supplied all requisite documentation before the new rule was introduced formally in January.

Bedene and the Lawn Tennis Association chief counsel Stephen Farrow travelled to Prague only to be told a decision would not be taken until the next ITF board meeting in March.

Murray, who had strongly hinted he would have advised British captain Leon Smith to pick Bedene for the final had he been available, has sympathy for his compatriot’s predicament.

Speaking to the BBC, Murray said: : “The fact that he had to go all the way over to Prague just to be told that they hadn’t made a decision, I think, is a bit disrespectful towards him.

“If they hadn’t made a decision, they could have just said, “We haven’t made a decision yet – we’re going to decide in March,” and he could have stayed at home.

“I think they have done everything correctly and in the right amount of time and I can understand from his side why you would be very frustrated with that.”
