Johanna Konta has renewed her sponsorship deal with Asics, which first signed the British player when she was just beginning her rise. Two years ago, Konta was ranked No. 114 and said it was a company “I’ve always wanted to be associated with.”
Now, she is in the top 30 following her first Grand Slam event semifinal at the Australian Open, which gained a lot of attention in Britain.
Financial terms of the deal were not given, but her increased standing means it is likely to have been for far more than the original agreement. A recent assessment by a sports sponsorship consultant in Britain suggested she could now earn up to a million pounds annually through a variety of deals.
“I kept working hard on my tennis which gave me some great opportunities and experience. That combined with a good off-season and a positive start to the season in Australia has me excited,” she said in a statement.
The shoe and apparel name also recently signed Daria Gavrilova and David Goffin.
The Japanese-based company has a 200-person research facility in Kobe, Japan, where athletes are invited for shoe fittings and to benefit from the company’s research.
Konta will wear Asics clothing and shoes as well as model its casual wear ‘Tiger’ line offcourt.
“We’re very proud to continue to support her on this journey by providing the latest technical footwear and apparel. As the number one tennis brand in Europe it’s important that we continue to work with players of Johanna’s considerable talents in order to further build . . . ASICS tennis,” said company executive Alistair Cameron in a statement.
Konta, who has a Hungarian background and was born in Australia, has lived in Britain since her teens and plays for the country.
