The left forearm injury which has bothered Maria Sharapova for months has forced the WTA No. 6 to pull out of the Doha event which starts a week from Monday.
The Russian has already had to withdraw from the Brisbane tournament at the start of January, exiting in the Australian Open quarter-finals to Serena Williams and then not playing last weekend in Russia’s Fed Cup loss to The Netherlands.
“Unfortunately, I will not be able to play the Qatar Total Open because of my left forearm injury. I would like to wish the tournament and all the great fans in Doha a great week of tennis and I hope to see them next year.” Sharapova said in a statement.
Sharapova, a two-time Qatar champion whose last title at the tournament came in 2008, had to quit the Wuhan Open in China last autumn with her arm problem.
