Yannick Noah has been reinstated as France’s Davis Cup captain for a third spell in charge following the sacking of Arnaud Clement from the post.

Noah, aged 55, remains the most popular tennis figure in his country by being the last Frenchman to win the French Open men’s singles title at Roland Garros 32 years ago. He also captained France to two Davis Cup titles in 1991 and again five years later.

He will be officially unveiled in Paris later today but a statement from the French Tennis Federation (FFT) read: “At the behest of the president of the French Tennis Federation, Jean Gachassin, and the national technical director, Arnaud Di Pasquale, the federal bureau of the FFT today named Yannick Noah as captain of the France Davis Cup team for the 2016 campaign.”

The 1991 triumph marked France’s first Davis Cup title for 59 years with a 3-1 win over a heavily favored United States team that included Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

Clement led France to the 2014 final where, despite home advantage in Lille, a team comprised of Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jean Benneteau were beaten by Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.

It is known that Clement and Tsonga are not exactly on friendly terms and the former captain said: “I think some asked for a change. But a vast majority of players supported me and I believe they would have been happy to continue with me next year.”

Although Noah has concentrated on being one of France’s leading pop music stars in recent years, he has kept in touch with tennis. However he caused a rumpus in 2011 when he accused Spanish athletes of widespread doping in an interview with a French newspaper.

As a repercussion, Rafael Nadal made it clear he would not be happy receiving the French Open’s Coupe de Mousquetaires from Noah if he again won at Roland Garros that year.
